Are You Suffering from Maskne?

Due to the pandemic the word maskne has now been added to all of our vocabularies, but knowing is only half the battle; here are a few tips on how to prevent maskne.

Nowadays, anytime spent outside requires a mask, but because of this, myself like many others are now suffering from acne.

The dreaded acne is caused by the chafing of a mask against the skin and the moisture trapped under.

Here a few tips and tricks on how to prevent and treat maskne.

in order to help prevent the spread of COVID 19, you must wear a mask, but the man you wear can be the cause of your maskne

When you are wearing a cloth mask it is important to frequently wash them after every use. It is easy to throw them in the washing machine but laundry detergents can be an irritant.

Personally, when I wash my masks I get a large pot of water boiling and let them boil for a few minutes, then let them air dry on a dishrag.

The masks are often wrinkled after being air-dried, in this case, I will sanitize my iron and quickly press them so they will fit properly to my face.

When I am wearing a disposable mask I change it every 4 hours or sooner if I am wearing makeup. It is important if you are looking to reuse your mask that you do not wear makeup in the area the mask covers.

At the beginning of the mask mandate, my acne was out of control. It took me a few months to perfect my routine but I am glad to have found one that works for me.

First I start off with washing my face with Cetaphil’s daily facial cleanser. If I was wearing makeup that day I will double cleanse with a Drunk Elephant Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser.

I follow up with a Boscia Exfoliating Peel gel to remove any dry or dead skin.

Following that with a spray Thayer’s Witch Hazel toner spray.

Alternating days I will use a retinoid or benzoyl peroxide following my use of toner.

Finishing it off with Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion.

It is extremely important to moisturize because this will prevent chafing from the mask allowing it to glide better when talking. The rough material of the mask can cause chaffing and inflammation of acne, creating more pimples to pop up. This was the one tip that really reduced my acne alongside my facial routine after getting back home. When I can safely remove my mask I often blot off the oil with up and up oil blotting sheets, this removes the sweat and breath droplets that were trapped in your mask.
