How to conquer oily summer skin

We know how it goes: our skin is red, scaly, and dried out due to the winter winds and below-freezing temperatures.  “Why does my face feel like a reptile?!”, we all scream in unison.  Then, almost overnight, it seems, it happens.  It’s suddenly 75 and sunny, and the world is at peace once again.  However, our skin most definitely isn’t.

*Cue the blotting papers*

Oilier skin in the summer months is a problem for many people.  So why does our skin get oilier in the summer, anyways?  The heat dries out one’s skin, riding us of our most natural protection against the sun.  Therefor, our skin switches into maximum oil production overdrive to make up for all of the oil that’s being dried up by the sun.  Heat increases one’s sebum production, which may be why you’re finding yourself oiler than usual once the summer months hit.  There is nothing we can do to control our skin’s sebum production; however, there are things we can do to manage it.

Keep Hydrated

One of the most common misconceptions of oily skin in general is that you need to constantly dry it out with intense acne or mattifying products to keep your oils at bay.  However, quite the opposite is true.  When our skin is extra oily, this clues us into knowing something is drying our skin out (an intense acne wash, the sun, etc.).  When our skin is moisturized daily the oils are replenished, therefor leaving us with more balanced, less oily skin.  Here are some great products to help balance out skin and beat oils once and for all:

1. Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel ($27,

This lightweight gel moisturizer is fast absorbing and specifically made for those with oily skin.  Dermatologist made, this oil and fragrance free gel is ideal for helping to balance oily skin.

2. Olehenriksen Counter Balance Oil Control Hydrator ($34,

This moisturizer is the Cadillac, if you will, of oily skin moisturizers and not for the faint of heart.  With potent active botanicals and powerful AHAs (aka natural substances from fruit that help clean out your pores), this moisturizer has ingredients that help shrink pore size as well as keep oily at bay.  This formula also significantly improves the wear of make up for up to 8 hours, so say goodbye to foundation slip n’ sliding all over your face.

A weekly face mask

A face mask helps dive deep into your pores and pull all the gunk that’s built up over time out!  Using a face mask once a week will not only reduce breakouts, but also make your skin smoother and more balanced.  Here are some of our favorites:

1. Mask of Magnaminty ($14.95-26.95,

This peppermint oil-filled mask is tingly, minty, and effective.  The crushed aduki beans in this mask lightly exfoliate while the kaolin clay helps dry out impurities and draw out excess oil.

2. Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask to Clear Pores ($4-26,

This mask is perfect to use at the end of a long week, as it cleans and refines pores.  The bamboo charcoal in this mask flushes out environmental toxins, dirt, and debris that can clog pores and cause the skin to become oilier.

Use a forgiving foundation

1. L’oréal Infallible Pro-Matte 24HR Foundation ($12.99,, CVS, Walgreens)

As someone who typically swears off any drugstore skincare or foundations, this foundation changed that for me.  This full coverage foundation still maintains a weightless feel on the skin and truly has lasted 12+ hours for me, still looking just as it did when I first applied it in the morning.

2. Lancôme Teint Idole Ultra Long Wear Foundation ($47,

If you’re in the mood to spend a pretty penny, this foundation is the one for you.  Oil free, long wearing, and SPF?!  Yes please!  This foundation leaves a velvety-matte finish.  This foundation is not thick or heavy, yet still delivers great, natural-looking coverage.  This formula also has perlite and silica, which absorbs oil for a shine-free wear.

Time-extending products

1. Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer ($37,

Prep your skin with this creamy primer, which extends the wear of makeup and keep skin very matte.

2. Urban Decay De-Slick Oil-Control Makeup Setting Spray ($30,,

This setting spray helps makeup stay put, reduce shine, and keeps skin looking matte.  The fine mist distributes evenly and isn’t sticky or tacky on the skin.

3. Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets ($4.49, Target)

These sheets absorb excess oil without smudging makeup or taking all of your makeup with it.  They’re great and simple for on the go and a must have for anyone who is sick of blotting their face with a napkin!
