This weekend would be Chinese Lunar New Year!
It’s the year of the Monkey this year.
They have fish, since the sound of fish in Chinese is similar to the Chinese word “abundant’
They also have sweets to wish themselves a very “Sweet” new year.
The New Year’s Eve is a chance for family reunion.
Also, children get “Red Envelope” from their parents and older relative
In the Red Envelope, there would be certain amount of money. Chinese people believe that by doing so the children are receiving the blessing from their elderly.
Mahjon needs four to play. Excited, funny, and intellectually challenged. But people do not play game only for fun, they are playing game to “Save Years”
It is a common belief for Chinese that if one stays up later the night during Chinese Lunar New Year’s Eve, he/she helps his/her parents to prolong a their lives.
The New Year’s Eve won’t end without a good firework.
In the mythology, the firework was used to scare the “Year Monster” away so that people can live happily ever after for another year. As time goes by, people started to realize there’s no “Year Monster”, but the tradition stays.
Chinese or not, we wish you a happy Monkey Year!
