Thrifting in NYC: 3 Great Thrift Stores

I love to shop for clothes, shoes and accessories. The problem is, there is this thing- I have to have money in order to shop. Being low on funds is a serious dilemma for most of us. With the MTA fares increasing and bridges costing our dignity, one would need to find some great styles for a good price. I adore earrings that dangle and consist of a vintage style. Once anything is titled vintage, it costs more (based on my shopping experience). Luckily, there are few thrift stores around that match what I have in my pocket and what I desire to wear. I must say a few because thrift stores in this day and time price their items equal to a regular retail store!

Thankfully, there are at least three thrift stores in New York City that possess great items for reasonable prices.

Pippin Vintage Jewelry

112 West 17th street

Between 7th avenue and Avenue of Americas

Pippin has received a lot of praise for its jewelry! The owners, Stephen and Rachel Copper, both having a fascination of relics and vintage pieces, came together and birthed Pippin Vintage Jewelry. They have costume jewelry for as low as five dollars and high-end pieces for about five hundred dollars. The vibe in Pippin Vintage Jewelry is warm and feels “at home”. It reminds me of when I used to nosy around in my great aunt’s jewelry closet.

Finder’s Keepers

121 West 116th Street

On the corner of Lenox Avenue

Finder’s Keepers is a small boutique that’s packed with unique pieces. If you are in love with sequins and the 1920’s- 40’s, you’ll fall in love with Finder’s Keepers. However, this store’s prices can be a bit expensive depending on what item you are interested in. Nonetheless, it’s worth it! The people who work there are very friendly and if you can’t find something your looking for, they can go in the back and search for your style. It’s a bit messy though. It could be the excited customers or maybe it appears messy because the space is limited. Either way, it has a “pack rat” appearance. Nonetheless, it’s a great place for us temporarily broke fashionistas to shop.

Immaculate Conception Church: Flea Market

414 E 14th St

Between Avenue A & 1st Avenue

The name is  a mouthful, know. Anyway, the original location for this flea market used to be on 11th street and Avenue A. The new location is a little bigger and less crowded. The bargains there are ridiculously awesome. I found a pair of black earrings with rhinestones and bow ties for only eight dollars. Sad to say, I destroyed those earrings from jumping around in a New York City fountain. (I would advise that none of you do such a thing.) It reminds me of a summer street fair, excluding the obnoxious turkey legs.
